Paper tape with a logo - eco-friendly branding in e-commerce

An increasing number of online stores are abandoning classic, plastic tape with a logo in favor of its paper counterpart. Paper tape with a logo seals packages just as effectively as the plastic version, while reducing the amount of plastic delivered to the customer along with the shipment.
Papierowa taśma z logo - ekologiczny branding w e-commerce

More and more online stores are abandoning classic, foil tape with a logo in favor of its paper counterpart. Paper tape with a logo allows you to close a package just as effectively as the foil version, while reducing the amount of plastic that reaches the customer with the shipment. This is especially important for brands that communicate concern for the environment externally - however, it is worth knowing that not all paper tape deserves to be called ecological, and this difference will be discussed later in the text.

What is standard paper tape with a logo

Standard paper tape with a logo is made of kraft paper - strong, brown or white packaging paper known from packaging and bags - covered with synthetic glue, most often rubber-based or hot-melt technology. It is this glue that is responsible for strong, immediate adhesion to the cardboard, similar to what users of standard foil tape are familiar with.

The paper carrier has one clear advantage over foil - after sealing the package, nothing needs to be separated when sorting waste. A piece of tape remains on the cardboard and goes with it to the paper bin, instead of ending up separately in the plastic bin. This is a real benefit that can be called a less waste approach - less waste to separate on the part of the recipient of the shipment.

The color of the paper, white or brown, should be chosen to match the color scheme of the rest of the packaging, so that the logo print stands out well on it.

However, it must be honestly stated that the glue itself in this version of paper tape with a logo is not biodegradable. It is still a synthetic compound, so this tape should not be called fully ecological - it is rather a step towards packaging that generates less waste than a completely environmentally neutral solution.

Paper packing tape with a logo and ecology

It is worth distinguishing between two products that are easy to confuse because they superficially look similar. The first is the standard paper packing tape with a logo described above, with synthetic glue - good for waste segregation, but not fully ecological due to the composition of the glue.

The second product is water-activated paper tape with custom print and logo. In this variant, the glue is biodegradable starch, which only starts to work when moistened with water just before application. This composition means that the entire tape - both the carrier and the glue - decomposes naturally, and the product can have an FSC certificate confirming the responsible origin of the paper raw material.

Applying water-activated tape requires a special dispenser that wets the glue just before it is attached to the cardboard. For companies packing large volumes of shipments, this is an investment in both the equipment itself and a new packing procedure. It is worth planning it in advance, before the new tape variant is permanently implemented.

It is the water-activated variant, not the standard tape with a logo, that deserves the term "ecological". The difference is not just marketing - it concerns the real composition of the glue and what happens to the tape after it is discarded. If your marketing communication strongly emphasizes ecology, it is worth considering this variant, and not basing the message solely on the paper carrier of standard tape.

Branding with paper tape in e-commerce practice

Paper tape with a logo most often appears on top of the package, precisely where the customer first looks when receiving the shipment. Unlike glossy film, the matte texture of paper gives a calmer, more natural visual effect – it harmonizes well with cardboard, especially kraft-colored ones.

An additional advantage of paper tape is the possibility of writing on its surface. A warehouse employee can manually mark the order number, packing date, or a short message for the courier, without the need to attach a separate label. For larger-scale shipments, this is a minor improvement that genuinely shortens the time it takes to prepare a package for shipping.

Consistent color scheme of the tape with the rest of the packaging – boxes, fillers, any thank you inserts – gives the shipment a uniform, well-thought-out look. Tape with a logo in such a combination acts as a complement to the entire brand presentation, rather than a separate, random element. This applies especially to stores that regularly ship goods in the same, repeatable packaging.

It is also worth remembering that the print itself will not replace the content on the carton or address label – tape with a logo serves a branding function, while the data necessary for delivery should be in a fixed, predictable place on the packaging.

Personalization – how to order tape with a logo?

Orderingpaper packaging tape with a logobegins by sending a graphic file with the company's logo and information about where on the tape it should be placed. Standard printing offers a limited number of print colors, so it is worth checking in advance whether the logo in a given color version will be legible on a paper, not necessarily white, background.

Before placing a larger order, it's also a good idea to decide whether you are only interested in the visual aspect and the possibility of segregation with cardboard, or if you want to base your communication on full eco-friendliness – this determines whether you choose standardpaper tape with a logo, or a water-activated variant.

It is also worth determining what width and length of the roll best suits the packing pace in your company – rolls that are too short for high shipping volumes mean more frequent changes and downtime at the packing station, especially during peak shipping seasons.

Paper tape with a logo is today one of the simplest ways to reduce plastic in packaging, without giving up visible branding on every shipment. If you only care about the tape being segregated together with the cardboard, the standard version is perfectly sufficient. However, if your brand is based on pro-ecological communication, it is worth going a step further and reaching for the water-activated variant – this is the only one that can honestly and without exaggeration be called fully ecological.
