How to pack a parcel in a cardboard box?

When considering how to pack a parcel for shipping, the first question that will likely come to mind is what to pack it in. A typical solution is a cardboard box. When choosing a box, you should primarily pay attention to its dimensions and the thickness of the paper it is made from.

  • The size of the box should be as closely matched as possible to the size of the products being shipped.
  • Choose a box that is rigid and, most importantly, one that will not tear under the weight of its contents. Thick box walls also provide protection for the contents, minimizing the risk of dents and other damage that could affect not only the box but also the shipped goods.
  • Both the type of cardboard box and the way the parcel is packed should be matched to the size, weight, and specific nature of the goods being shipped.

Especially when it is not possible to match the size of the box to its contents, but also when the packaging matches the size of the shipped goods, remember to fill all empty spaces in the box when packing the parcel. This will prevent products from shifting, minimizing the risk of damage. You can use bubble wrap, foam, polystyrene peanuts, or old newspapers for filling.

Fill the inside of the package so that there are no empty spaces after closing, while also ensuring that there are no bulges caused by overfilling the box. In both cases, the risk of both unwanted opening of the package and damage to the contents increases.

  • this is particularly important when shipping multiple items,
  • reliable when fulfilling orders for single products,
  • necessary when shipping goods made of delicate materials or prone to scratches (e.g., glass, porcelain).

How to pack a parcel for shipping without worrying about the durability of the packaging?

Strong, durable packaging tapes are essential. Because when packing parcels, it's crucial to use durable materials that will withstand the journey and storage in warehouses.

  • Packaging tape with a width of approximately 48 mm to 75 mm, covered with strong adhesive that ensures a durable bond, will help prevent the parcel from opening spontaneously or being opened by an unauthorized person.
  • Packaging tapes also provide additional security – by applying them to the joints of the carton walls, you increase its strength. It's worth using the "double T" method – by applying tape to the side edges and at the carton's closure, this will prevent unwanted opening of the parcel.
  • Remember to smooth the tape with your hand or a tape dispenser's squeegee after application so that it adheres fully to the carton.

When considering how to pack parcels, it's worth remembering that many types of tapes are available on the market. Thanks to this, you can adjust the type of packaging tape to the specifics of the shipment, which will further positively impact the durability of the packaging. For example:

  • if the parcel will be stored in a cold room, it's worth choosing freezer tape,
  • if it will be stored for a long time, eco-solvent tape, which provides an increasingly strong bond over time, will work perfectly,
  • for packing large, heavy parcels, reach for glass fiber reinforced tapes,
  • if, on the other hand, you are sending valuable goods, you can additionally use security tapes, leaving a trace on the carton, acting as a kind of seal.

Additionally, packaging tapes are a way not only to pack a parcel safely, but also effectively. You can opt for aesthetically made packaging tapes with a print, for example, in the form of your company's logo or an advertising slogan. This way, you can also use tapes to advertise your business. Remember that you can also choose paper tapes – this is an ecological solution that customers will certainly appreciate.

As an additional reinforcement, you can use stretch films. These are strong, durable films that effectively protect parcels from damage, opening, or theft of contents.

Remember about labels – not just address labels

You already know how to pack a parcel for a courier, but without an address label, even the most durable packaging method will be useless. Remember to stick the address label in a visible place on the carton, if possible not at the closure of the packaging. It's worth protecting such a label by placing it in a special film – this will help avoid the risk of tearing or getting wet. Instead of address labels, you can also choose courier pouches – available in a set with protective film.

And although address labels are the most important, they are not the only ones. It is also worth using information labels that will help increase the safety of parcels. Depending on the contents of the parcel, you can choose labels with prints that convey information such as:

Protect yourself in case of a lost parcel

One of the easiest ways is to prepare a transport label in original and copy. Place the copy of the label inside the parcel. This solution will allow for faster tracing of the parcel if it gets lost. Remember to include contact details for your company on the label, as well as a list of items in the shipment, which will allow for identification of the contents in case of damage or opening of the parcel.
