Which self-adhesive labels to choose? A guide

Self-adhesive labels have unlimited applications, and the selection is constantly growing.

What self-adhesive labels should you choose to meet expectations in the office, warehouse, or mail-order store? We advise on their types, their potential uses, and the criteria to consider when selecting a specific type of label.

What self-adhesive labels to choose

The choice of self-adhesive labels largely depends on their intended use (e.g., whether they will be labels for packages and shipping envelopes, or for marking shelves and goods in warehouses, or perhaps for electronic equipment). One cannot overlook the specific conditions in which the label will be stored. This primarily refers to food products. For example, for frozen foods and products in cold storage, thermal transfer self-adhesive labels resistant to moisture and low temperatures will be useful. On the other hand, for sealing shipping envelopes, paper thermal labels will suffice. It is also worth considering criteria such as size, shape, adhesive, material, color, print type, or label type (on a roll or sheet). What can be said about each of them?

  • Size
  • Size
  • Number of labels per roll

  • Size

Label size

Consider the size of the self-adhesive label (width and height) that you will match to the equipment you have for processing the labeland preparing it for application to an envelope, package, product, etc., as well as the size of the products or packages on which the labels will be placed.

Label shape

The traditional shape of a self-adhesive label is rectangular. It will work well in standard solutions, e.g., barcodes, shipping labels, etc. However, you can choose an unusual format(e.g., oval or round) when you particularly want to show creativity, e.g., when promoting a new product or drawing attention to your brand. Their unusual shape is created using a special die cutter.

Adhesive

Self-adhesive labels can have a permanent adhesive(strong) or an easy-peel adhesive(easy to remove). The latter will work great on products from which the customer will want to remove the label, e.g., decorations, windows, doors. Its advantage is easy removability without leaving a trace. Permanent adhesive, on the other hand, will be suitable for applications requiring indefinite labeling.

Tape material

The market most often distinguishes self-adhesive labels made from materials such as:

  • paper (white paper and kraft paper) – commonly used, but less durable and resistant to moisture. Mainly used for shipping labels, marking packages and packaging for storage in a dry place. FSC-certified self-adhesive labels are made from paper from certified wood, making them environmentally friendly;
  • PE film (polyethylene)– flexible, mainly used for soft packaging, such as cosmetic containers or films;
  • PP film (polypropylene)– durable and rigid, yet easy to process thermally. It is resistant to moisture, high temperatures, and chemicals. This gives it many applications, e.g., for labeling food packaging, promotional materials, clothing, home furnishings, etc.;
  • PET (polyester)– resistant to temperature fluctuations, moisture, and abrasion. It is well suited for warehouses, e.g., for marking information signs and fixed assets;
  • acrylic– resistant to high temperatures (up to 300 ℃), UV radiation, and chemicals. Acrylic labels are used for warranty seals or shelf labeling in warehouses;
  • vinyl– flexible, well suited for labeling uneven surfaces, resistant to varying temperatures and moisture, does not conduct electricity, therefore it is used for labeling electronic parts.

Color

White self-adhesive labels are most commonly used, allowing for any black or colored print, as well as handwritten notes. However, you can also choose colored labels to distinguish your brand or product.

Print type

Two types of self-adhesive labels are most commonly distinguished:

  • thermal labels – the label paper is covered with a thermoactive substance that changes color under the influence of printer heat. They only allow monochrome printing – in black. Thermal labels are not very resistant to UV radiation, and over time the print quality decreases. They are well suited for marking shipments, packages, and envelopes, and all applications that do not require indefinite durability;
  • thermal transfer labels– enable black and color printing on paper and plastics. They are more resistant to light, temperature, moisture, and mechanical damage. They will work well where durable printing is needed.

Labels on a roll or in sheets?

A common question is what self-adhesive labels to choose: on a roll or in sheets? Self-adhesive labels on a rollare more convenient to use than labels in sheets, especially if you want to mark as many packages or products as possible in the shortest possible time. A special label applicator will help you automate your work and increase its efficiency. Self-adhesive labels are a good carrier of information, e.g., printed labels can contain messages: "documents inside", "fragile glass!", "do not throw", "Check content in the presence of the carrier", which increases shipment safety.

Self-adhesive labels in sheetswill be useful in places where labeling is done on a small scale, e.g., in small offices and companies, for home use, labeling products, folders, envelopes, binders, mass mailings, etc. They are perfectly suited for inkjet printers, laser printers, photocopiers, and digital printing, as well as manual marking. Labels on a sheet come in various types and formats, most often these are:

Their smooth paper allows for any print.

Application of self-adhesive labels

Self-adhesive labels have a wide range of applications. They can be used for:

  • marking products and goods, e.g., food, cosmetics, articles, or household goods. They can be used to mark both large boxes and cartons, as well as smaller envelopes, bottles, jars, plastic cups, etc.
  • labeling envelopes and shipments, e.g., both individual and in mass mailings,
  • marketing activities, e.g., for marking new products or promotions and sales,
  • placing a large amount of information even on small packages (e.g., triple labels: after peeling off the top layer of the label, the bottom layer with a product description or usage instructions is visible).

Advantages of self-adhesive labels

Self-adhesive labels have many advantages, including:

  • ease and speed of application (especially roll labels),
  • compatibility with many printing devices, and thus automation of work,
  • possibility of personalizing labels, e.g., to distinguish your brand or place important information for a given product on them,
  • versatility of applications,
  • high quality of workmanship.

Brand building – labels with individual printing

A special type of labels are self-adhesive labels with individual printing, which are great for marketing activities. Design a label tailored to your business needs– choose a logo, slogan, motto, etc. By sending products or shipments with such a label, you will increase brand recognition and positive messaging. And by additionally choosing labels made of ecological materials, you will gain customer recognition as a company that cares about the environment.
