What is water-activated tape?

Water-activated tape is a product usually made from kraft paper. It requires contact with water for the adhesive to activate and adhere to surfaces. The main characteristic feature of this ecological tape is its starch-based adhesive, activated by water. Once the tape is applied to the surface with a dispenser and the adhesive dries, it creates a very strong and durable bond that is difficult to break without visible signs of packaging damage. One of the key aspects in which these tapes differ is their width. The availability of the product in many sizes makes them a versatile tool for businesses, allowing them to adapt to specific packaging needs.

How does water-activated packaging tape work?

This innovative packaging solution creates a reliable bond with cardboard boxes. It works on the principle of migrating adhesive which, upon activation with water, bonds with the cardboard fibers. The key to the effectiveness of paper tape is the correct amount and temperature of water. It is recommended to use warm water at a temperature of 30°C, and a suitable dispenser can help maintain this temperature.

This device not only allows for efficient tape application but also for proper cutting. Dispensers can be divided into:

• manual – characterized by a handle that is pulled by the user to separate the tape. Inside the mechanism, the lever's movement is converted into a feed wheel drive, which allows the tape to pass through special water-soaked brushes. Due to its simplicity, mobility, and cost-effectiveness, such a solution is ideal for those who prefer portable solutions;
• semi-automatic – a key feature of this dispenser is the ability to program two different tape lengths, allowing for length adjustment depending on packaging needs. Thanks to this solution, the user does not have to do this manually each time, which speeds up the packaging process and minimizes tape waste. Adjustment is done via a button, which is extremely convenient and allows for precise adjustment of the tape length to specific needs;
• automatic – these dispensers work similarly to manual ones, but everything is electronically controlled. The user simply selects the desired tape length using buttons. The advantage of such a solution is speed and precision. They are also often equipped with a water heating system, which improves adhesive activation and ensures better tape adhesion. Electronic dispensers significantly speed up the packaging process.
